In a riveting turn of events, over 400 miners who had been trapped underground for four days in a South African gold mine east of Johannesburg emerged on Monday. Ziyaad Hassam, representing Gold One, the company operating the mine in Springs, expressed relief that the challenging situation was coming to an end. However, he acknowledged the need for collaboration with unions to prevent such incidents from recurring.
The ordeal began when, at the end of a night shift, some employees, their faces concealed under balaclavas, prevented their colleagues from resurfacing by seizing their badges. Subsequently, a significant number of miners chose to remain underground in protest. This action mirrored a similar incident in October when over 500 miners stayed underground for three days due to a union dispute, resulting in dismissals.
Last week, the complexity deepened as an investigator sent to examine the cause of the October blockade was shot dead under unclear circumstances. Gold One suspects a connection between the murder and the earlier layoffs.
The miners, gradually resurfacing in small groups, faced challenging conditions underground with limited food and water. Some described unbearable circumstances, noting instances of comrades fainting. The situation escalated, with dehydration and tensions leading to scuffles among miners.
Upon reaching the surface, miners were visibly exhausted and in need of sustenance. A shed was set up to distribute food, where some miners shed their dirty clothes and celebrated, while others couldn’t hold back tears.
One miner, speaking anonymously, revealed that hunger was a driving force for their emergence after enduring four days without food. Some miners sported T-shirts representing the mining union AMCU, emphasizing the call for union recognition—a central issue in the October dispute.
