Kenya wants to make history.
The country has officially submitted its bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, chasing a chance to become the first African nation to stage athletics’ biggest global event.
Nairobi is now up against London, Rome and Munich, with World Athletics expected to announce the winning bid next month.
Athletics Kenya says the bid has full government backing, including commitments on security, infrastructure and the organisation needed to host a major international sporting event.
The proposed centrepiece is Kasarani Stadium, which can accommodate about 48,000 spectators.
And Kenya has the athletics credentials to make a serious case.
The country has won 72 World Championship gold medals and 38 Olympic gold medals, while Kenyan athletes currently hold 17 world records across track and road events.
Kenya also finished second on the medal table at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, collecting seven gold medals.
The country has hosted major athletics competitions before, including the 2007 World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa, the 2017 World Under-18 Championships and the 2021 World U20 Championships in Nairobi.
Now, Kenya is going for the biggest prize yet.
If Nairobi wins, 2029 could be the year the World Athletics Championships finally come to Africa.
